Three exciting wine brands to try during SRW


7 fantastic wines – 2 rosé, 1 white and 4 red – mean your palate won’t get bored during Sofia Restaurant Week, especially if you’re taking a tour of several restaurants.

All the wines for SRW 3 come from the region of Damianitza, near Melnik in south-west Bulgaria. While ORMANO and Tipsy Virgin are produced by respected winery Damianitza, the organic wines Chiflik Livadi come from the symbiotic farm of the same name.

1. Типси Върджин Розе Мелник, Винарна ДамяницаTipsy Virgin Rosé is a superb wine in a superb package – featuring a glass cork and original label by artist Tekla Alexieva, who has created her own tongue-in-cheek version of Botticelli’s legendary Birth of Venus. Not your regular angel! Tipsy Virgin looks beautiful, delicate and innocent but that’s not the case at all. The wine world is full of angels and it’s time for something devilish for balance. The flirty, seductive rosé from Broadleafed Melnik and Early Melnik vines is the perfect way to keep those summer flavours going through into the autumn.

Tasting notes: Medium intensity salmon colour. Delicate fruit bouquet of red fruits and white cherries. Medium body, fresh acids and a mineral finish.

2. ОРМАНО БялoORMANO is the name of the fertile lands along the river Struma. Once upon a time they were covered in forests, long since cut down to make way for agricultural production. Meaning forest in Turkish, the word ORMAN gave the old name of Damianitza – Orman Chiflik and now to a new wine that honours the fertility of this region and preserves the memory of past times before modern agriculture exhausted the soil.

4 wines are on offer:

ORMANO White: Straw colour with green notes, medium intensity. Juicy, round body with a decided mineral freshness. (Fermentation takes place with naturally occurring wild yeast, slowly, taking around 2 months at medium low temperature)

ORMANO rosé: Medium intensity salmon colour. Delicate fruit bouquet of strawberry and cherry. Sweet aftertaste. Recommended serving temperature 10-12 ˚C.

ORMANO Cabernet Sauvignon: Medium bodied, tannins have a grainy structure. Can be consumed now or be left to improve for the next two years.
(Fermentation of whole, uncrushed grapes taking around 4 weeks. Spends 8-10 months in the barrel.)

ORMANO Reserva: Complex fruit bouquet, long, inviting aftertaste.

7. ЧИФЛИК ЛИВАДИ Резерва ОрганикChiflik Livadi offers ORGANIC wines from the symbiotic farm of the same name.

CHIFLIK LIVADI Merlot Organic Medium body, rounded tannins. Bouquet of black cherries and plums, tangible mineral notes. (Fermentation of whole, uncrushed grapes taking around 4 weeks. Spends 8-10 months in the barrel.)

CHIFLIK LIVADI Reserva Organic Sort: Syrah and Merlot
